How I Got Here
I began college pursuing a degree in Philosophy, yet as I dove deeper into the major, I was continually frustrated by its inability to impact the real world, here and now, not hundreds of years in the future. That frustration led me to Sociology, where I could apply theories about the social world’s inequity to the real world, helping and impacting the lives of those most affected. Simultaneously, I began working at the GIS Lab, and it felt like a new path had opened up for me. Combining two of my found passions in College, I could chart a unique path in Sociology, one marked by maps that visually depict the inequity I had now spent years studying and papers that describe and analyze it. I spent my last summer educating and mentoring high schoolers on GIS skills and climate justice issues, showing them how the reasons why certain groups are disproportionately affected by climate justice issues and how they can be tackled using GIS. In my final year, I’ve been TAing for the Intro to GIS class, continuing to study Sociology, mentoring non-GIS students on how to use it for their sociology work, and plan to present some of my work at the ESS Conference in March.
